For home installations, specific locations require a bunded tank by law, regardless of size. Please check all that apply:

Is the tank location within 10 metres of a river, stream, lake, pond, canal, ditch, or coastal water?

Is it within 50 metres of a well, borehole, or spring (used for drinking water or food production)?

Could a spill run over hard ground (e.g., concrete) and reach a waterway or drain?

Is it within a Groundwater Source Protection Zone 1 (SPZ1)? (You can check Environment Agency maps online if unsure)

Will the tank's vent pipe NOT be clearly visible from the fill point (a 'blind fill')?

Key Installation & Siting Points:

The tank base must be solid, level, non-combustible, and extend 300mm beyond the tank on all sides.
Maintain fire separation distances: typically 1.8m from non-fire-rated buildings/eaves/openings and 760mm from non-fire-rated boundaries (like fences). Always check current OFTEC guidelines.
Position the tank to minimise risk of vehicle impact damage. Consider barriers if needed.
Installation, especially for domestic heating oil, should be done by a competent person (e.g., OFTEC registered technician).
Regularly inspect the tank and bund for damage or leaks. Annual servicing by a professional is recommended.
